Documentary Film Series Presents "A Place to Stand

The 18th annual Documentary Film Series at 女神羞羞研究所 will open at 2 p.m. Sunday with Daniel Glick鈥檚 鈥淎 Place to Stand.鈥 All films in the series will be screened free to the public in the Kerr McGee Auditorium in Meinders School of Business.

The series is made possible through a gift from the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Endowment Fund.

鈥淎 Place to Stand鈥 tells the story of celebrated poet and Santa Fe, N.M., native Jimmy Santiago Baca. Baca was a petty thief and a drug dealer when he was sentenced to five years in one of the deadliest prisons in America, the Arizona State Prison.

He began his incarceration violent, angry and illiterate, yet taught himself how to read and write, discovering a passion for poetry that ultimately saved his life. The film is inspired by Baca鈥檚 best-selling memoir of the same name published in 2001. The book was called 鈥渆legant and gripping鈥 (Los Angeles Times) and 鈥渁n astonishing narrative that affirms the triumph of the human spirit鈥 (###em).

The Documentary Film Series theme is titled 鈥淭hing and Spirit Both.鈥 It is based on a poem by Marie Howe, who will visit 女神羞羞研究所 April 6 for this year鈥檚 Thatcher Hoffman Smith Poetry Series.
